2009 NFL Mock Draft - Round 2

PICK #33: DETROIT LIONS

After picking up an Offensive Tackle and Defensive End in the first round, the lions need to make a move for their long term. Daunte is not the long-term answer at quaterback and Josh Freeman has the tools to be a big time NfL quarterback if he can sit and learn for a year or 2.

The Pick: Josh Freeman

PICK #34: NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

The Pats are looking to reload, not rebuild. Their defense is predicated on the loaded front 7 that they put together and they need to set it up for the future. Laurinitis is a perfect fit for the inside of the 3-4, and Clay Matthews has a bright future in the NFL and is an intelligent, team oriented player. He will be a great fit in New England.

PICK #35: ST. LOUIS RAMS

The Rams first pick brought them a potential replacement for Orlando, in the second round, they will need to pick up a second receiver, replacing Tory Holt. Kenny Britt is an all around receiver who was one of the most productive in the history of the Big East.

PICK #36 CLEVELAND BROWNS

The Browns need to continue to focus on their defense. They have an up and coming young cornerback in Eric Wright. Adding another premier cornerback talent would put them on a path to have a much-improved defense. After all, it is awful tough to cheat your safeties into the box if your cornerbacks can't hold their own on the outside. Alphonso Smith is big time talent who was a leader on an excellent Wake Forest defense.

PICK #37: SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

The Seahawks are have put together a quality, young defense. However, the other side of the ball is getting old in a hurry, and with Walter Jones' offseason knee surgery being the most glaring example. The seahawks offense is at it's best when it can run the ball to set up Matt Hasselbeck for play action. Phil Loadholt is a monstrous run blocker who was the leader of the Offensive Line for Oklahoma's dynamic offense.

PICK #38: CINCINNATI BENGALS

The Bengals should be solid on offense, but for the past several years, their defense has been the weak link. They made a move to solidify their run defense by getting the best Defensive Tackle in this year's draft in the first round, B.J. Raji. They badly need a pass rushing presence on the outside as well. Michael Johnson has the talent to be a pro bowl player someday and should be able to provide the pass rush they need immediately.

PICK #39 JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS

The Jags made a pick that will shore up multiple needs on their offense in the first round by picking up electric Percy Harvin. The Jags built their personality and reputation on defense though, and they have had some losses the past few years. Evander Hood is a dynamic talent on the inside and will immediately add qualty depth to their DL rotation, at worst. It is not out of the question to see him starting beside John Henderson before the season is out.

PICK #40: OAKLAND RAIDERS

With a monster pick at Offensive Tackle in hand, the Raiders need an NFL-ready receiver in the second round. Brian Robiskie has shown surprising measurable in his predraft work to go along with his work as a dependable, consistent target in his time at Ohio State. That, combined with his life around the NFL with his dad being a coach, makes him as NFL ready as you are going to find.

PICK #41 GREEN BAY PACKERS

The Pack is looking to follow the trend with the 3-4 defense coming back into vogue. They were looking at B.J. Raji for their first pick, but he was off the board at their pick. In the second round, they will take his high rated college teammate. Ron Brace isn't Raji, but he was very solid and has the size and strength to play Nosetackle in the 3-4.

PICK #42 BUFFALO BILLS

Michael Oher was a great value pick for them going forward, but they still need an improved pass rush. Aaron Maybin would have been a first round pick a lot of years. He will be welcome in Buffalo with open arms.

PICK #43 SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS

The 49ers need a Right Tackle to pair with Joe Staley, especially with their release of Jonas Jennings. Eben Britton has the talents to be a quality NFL tackle, having excelled in that location at Arizona.

PICK #44 MIAMI DOLPHINS

The are team that with 2 superior running backs who had to use the "Wildcat" formation in order to form a successful running attack. They made a nice pick for a cornerstone tackle last year in Jake Long. Putting Duke Robinson beside him will make for a dominating left side for the future.

PICK #45 NEW YORK GIANTS

The Giants made some nice moves to shore up their depth in their defensive front 7 in the offseason, leaving them open to shore up their secondary. After all, playing in the NFC east you cannot have weaknesses in your defenses. The offenses are too good and too well balanced, and they will take advantage. The Giants can stand to upgrade at both Free Safety and Nickleback positions, and William Moore is the best safety in this draft.

PICK #46 HOUSTON TEXANS

The Texans had a great first round, picking up 2 pieces that their offense has desperately needed. In the second round, they will make a pick for their defense. They need a second edge rusher to pair with Mario Williams. Larry English out of Northern Illinois is a tweener who has the potential and athletic ability to play in the NFL at either Defensive End or Outside Linebacker.

PICK #47 NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

The Pats are using this draft to shore up an aging defense. Their first 2 picks have yielded potential starters at 2 linebacker positions. The third pick needs to shore up the back of their defense. Free agency has provided short term starters, but Darius Butler will compete for work now, while teaming with Leah Bodden to set them up at cornerback for the future.

PICK #48 DENVER BRONCOS

The Broncos are moving to the 3-4, and this draft is part of that. Maualaga should provide a solid MLB for the future in their 3-4. Clint Simtim experienced the 3-4 playing in Virginia's defense, and has the physical tools to translate that experience to the NFL. He should be a solid player for several years.

PICK #49 CHICAGO BEARS

Chicago's defense has fallen greatly since their NFL appearance a few years back. They have a good linebacking corp, but their defense line has been ravaged by age and departures. Connor Barwin is a high character guy who can really bring it off the edge. An ex-tight end, he has great feet, speed, and ball skills to go along with his proven value as an every down D-end.

PICK #50 CLEVELAND BROWNS

Jamal Lewis is a quality, power back. However, he has been doing this for a long time now. It is time for the Browns to think seriously about who is going to replace him. Shonn Green was one of the most consistent downhill runners in the NCAA last year. He has a lot of tread left on the tires, having been the lead back at Iowa for only one year. He will give the Browns the seconond back they have been lacking when Jamal was not available.

PICK #51 DALLAS COWBOYS

With the release of Roy Williams, the Cowboys need a Safety. Louis Delmar is one of the best available in this draft, and should be able to give them the coverage capability that the hard-hitting Williams never did.

PICK #52 NEW YORK JETS

The Jets have made a lot of moves the last 2 years to improve their team. They have quality players at every position. This is a draft for them to look for quality, period. Rashad Jennings is a small school guy with big time talent. He should fit into the Jets well, allowing them to free Leon Washington up from his return responsibilities while having another weapon available to Kellen Clemens and Matt Stafford in the future.

PICK #53 PHILADELPHIA EAGLES

The L.J. Smith experiment showed a lot of promise, but didn't quite work out like the Eagles had hoped. That being the case, they still need a receiving threat at tight end, and in their offense, Chase Coffman would be a real find. He is one of the best receiving tight ends in the history of college football, and would be a red zone threat. That is something the eagles have been missing for several years.

PICK #54 MINNESOTA VIKINGS

The Vikings have a solid defense, one of the best rushing attacks in the league, and a new Quarterback to compete for the starting job. They have spent several picks the last few years on wide receivers, but still need to build a dynamic receiver corp. Ramses Barden is a unique athlete at Wide Receiver. He is as big, or bigger than most tight ends, and has legitimate outside speed with good hands. The NFL will be a big jump for him from division II, but his potential will be too intriguing for the Vikings to pass up.

PICK #55 ATLANTA FALCONS

The Falcons still need to replace Deangelo Hall at lead cornerback. Mike Mickens was a stud at Cincinnati and should be a quality NFL cornerback. He can cover, tackle, and lead as a defensive player.

PICK #56 MIAMI DOLPHINS

The Fins need a way to diversify their offense. The best players at WR are gone, but there is a very interesting option on the board that should appeal to them. With their affinity for the "Wildcat" formation, and need at wide receiver, Patrick White would give them the offensive flexibility to do some really exciting things on offense.

PICK #57 BALTIMORE RAVENS

The success of the Ravens flavor of the 3-4 depends on their linebackers ability to run free. They need big time Nose Tackles to keep the interior linemen off of Ray Lewis and his comrades.
Fili Noala did just that at USC and has the size and good athletic ability for a defensive tackle.

PICK #58 NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

The Patriots have not had a significant weapon at Tight End since Ben Coates was in his prime. Jared Cook is a raw, but talented Tight End. He has the speed and hands to be a real weapon in the passing game. His blocking and route running needs help, but he will be an instant upgrade, and if any coaching staff can straigthen him out, this is the one.

PICK #59 CAROLINA PANTHERS

The Panthers predicate everything on their running game. Jeff Otah and Ryan Khalil have been great draft picks for them the past few years on the Offensive Line. Herman Johnson will be another. He is a monster of a Guard and putting him beside Otah or Jordan Gross should open huge holes for whichever of Carolina's quality young runningbacks is toting the ball.

PICK #60 NEW YORK GIANTS

Patrick Chung
will be a pick to give the Giants depth in the secondary going forward as he can help at both safety spots as well as at Nickel or Dime.

PICK #61 INDIANAPOLIS COLTS

The Colts have lost a couple of starting cornerbacks the past few years. Franceis Coye is a good cover corner. He should start for the Colts quickly, if not in year one.

PICK #62 TENNESSEE TITANS

The Titans are a defensive team. Right now, their depth chart contains 3 cornerbacks after losing a couple to free agency. Jairus Byrd is a big, physical corner who can really play. He is especially good in press coverage. His physical style should fit well with the Titans team concept.

PICK #63 ARIZONA CARDINALS

Antonio Smith was one of the leaders of a much-improved front 7 for the Cardinals last year. His departure leaves a hole that needs to be filled. Paul Kruger is a quality D-End who can get to the quarterback and plays with a great motor.

PICK #64 PITTSBURGH STEELERS

The Steelers are always on the lookout for players who fit their system. Jarron Gilbert is one of those guys. He is a D-End with good size at 6'5" 280 and should fit the Steeler's scheme very well.
