2011 NFL DRAFT RESULTS....and the Jokes ROUND 1

1. CAROLINA PANTHERS: QB Cam Newton
This reminds me of driving down the street watching the car in front of you weave in and out of lanes of traffic, you know they are going to crash, and you know it's going to be horrific.  And you just can't slow them down.  The only way this makes sense is if they have found someone who is going to take Jimmy Claussen off their hands.  They gave into public sentiment, and no matter how many times you hear that this is a "QB centric league", you need a team to win.

I wish them luck, but really?  another QB?  I wonder if Mike Goodson is any good out of a belly option.

2. DENVER BRONCOS: OLB Von Miller
Well, they needed players to help them move into a 4-3 and technically, Miller is an outside linebacker, but I don't think that pass rushers was their issue.  Miller was a one trick pony at A&M but I guess 27 sacks in 2 years was a hell of a trick.

With all the pass rushers in this draft, I would have gone to another position and revisited later in the draft.  But, then again, Elway, I am not.  I guess they figure Timmy is going to score so many points their defense will just be able to pin their ears back.  Go team Tebow!!!!

3. BUFFALO BILLS: DT Marcell Dareus
This is a great pick for the Bills.  Offensive Tackle was a bigger need, but Dareus fills a need and was the top player on the board.  They can plug him in at whichever positions they feel is weakest on their D-Line and be improved for it.

4. CINCINNATI BENGALS: WR A.J. Green
REALLY!!!!!?  Your quarterback wants out, you have 3 receivers and  tight end drafted in the last couple years who are playing well enough to start, so you draft another Wide Receiver?  Well you gotta love the Bungals.  Morons, nothing against A.J. Green.  He is a great ball player and will probably start, but damn.

5. ARIZONA CARDINALS: CB Patrick Peterson
It's Christmas in the desert.  Peterson gives them the second half of a great pair of corners, which opens up so many opportunities for the defense.  It wasn't a huge need, but he is considered a generational talent at corner, and how many times has Arizona had a chance to draft someone like that?  Seriously, when?  ever?  I mean, the Cardinals are the worst franchise in history.  I mean...errr...great pick for the Cardinals.

6. ATLANTA FALCONS: WR Julio Jones
The Falcons needed another weapon to make their offense just a touch more explosive.  Jones does that, and he is a great blocking wide receiver which will fit well with Atlanta's balanced attack.....So, good player, good fit, but 5 @#$%ING PICKS?  Does noone remember the Herschel Walker trade?

7. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS: DE/OLB Aldon Smith
The Niners love their defense, and Aldon Smith can really bring the heat off the edge.  I really thought they would want a second corner at this point, so look for them to pick one up later.  Good for them for not reaching for a QB at 7.  I do not expect them to struggle again in their division.

8. TENNESSEE TITANS: QB Jake Locker
I'll have to come back and write something here when I can stop laughing.  Idiots....just stupid, reaching....wow.

9. DALLAS COWBOYS: OT Tyron Smith
I didn't have him as my top Tackle on the board, but he is a great talent, with a huge upside.  A nice talent picked to fill a HUGE need.  A very solid pick for the 'Boys'.

10. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS: Blaine Gabbert
I like this situation for Gabbert and the Jags.  I was surprised to see them trade up to get him, but he is a huge talent who needs time.  They have a starting QB for him to learn sit behind while he learns.  You can debate the cost, but I am not surprised to see a move like this after the success that Aaron Rodgers is experiencing in Green Bay.

11. HOUSTON TEXANS: DE J.J. Watt
I think this was a reach.  J.J. Watt is a very good player, and he is perfect for a 3-4 defensive front.  I think he would have been available in the next round, but they got their guy in Houston.  Tough to argue with their front offices valuing of D-Ends after Mario Williams a couple years back.

12. MINNESOTA VIKINGS: QB Christian Ponder
This was a shocker.  I like Ponder a lot, but the Vikings got scared at the run on QB's and took the next available. If they can keep Ponder healthy, he can make every play, call, and throw that there is.  A big roll of the dice, but at least it wasn't on a headcase.

13. DETROIT LIONS: DT Nick Fairley
WOW, the Lions need players all over right, everywhere except defensive tackle....right?  Well, that maybe the case, but answer me this.  How many Offensive Linemen is it going to take to block Fairley and Suh?  4?  5?  This changes the identity of the Lions.  I LOVE it.

14. ST. LOUIS RAMS: DE Robert Quinn
This is the one positions outside of QB that I didn't expect to see a pick by the Rams.  Quinn is a hell of a ball player though.  I was really hoping, for their sake, that the Rams would look for a Wide Receiver here, but there are lot of weapons that will be available later in the draft.

15. MIAMI DOLPHINS: OL Mike Pouncey
I really don't get this pick.  See what happens when Parcells leaves?
The whole thing falls apart.  Heh, it's fun to watch isn't it.

16. WASHINGTON REDSKINS: DE Ryan Kerrigan
I like Kerrigan, he is a prototype D-End....for the 4-3.  The problem here is the Skins are running a 3-4.....aren't they?  Maybe this is a sign of a shift in defensive scheme in Washington.  Otherwise...yeah...well, it's Washington.

17. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS: OT Nate Solder
Damn you Bill Belichek for getting a great player at a need position...again.

18. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS: DT Corey Liuget
Another big body for the Chargers flavor of the 3-4.  Liuget is a beast.

19. NEW YORK GIANTS: CB Prince Amukamura
The Giants need help on the back half of their defense and Prince A. would have been the top corner in most drafts.  Maybe he'll shoot himself in the leg, or get caught with one of those Nebraska sheep against a fence.  Sorry, I'm a Philly fan, can't help myself.

20. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS: DE Adrian Clayborn
Everyone knew it was going to be an End for the Bucs.  I went back and forth between Clayborn and Bowers.  Maybe the Bucs are scared of Clemson guys.  Clayborn is a nice player who gives them another piece to what is quickly becoming a very solid D-Line.

21. CLEVELAND BROWNS: NT Phil Taylor
They wanted a WR here, but with the top 2 gone, they'll take the top Nose Tackle on the board to plug into the middle of their defense.  Taylor is a big athletic tackle who will upgrade their Defensive Line rotation.  This is a little curious though, because they were rumored to be considering a move back to 4 man front.

22. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS: OT Anthony Castonzo
Castonzo being here was a gift for the Colts.  They need a new Left Tackle ASAP.  Castonzo has been working on an island since day one at Boston College, and he has been a stud all the way through.

23. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES: OG Danny Watkins
Watkins is an Andy Reid kind of guy, but really, a Guard in the first round????  I have learned to have some faith because they seem to restock every year, but come on.  A Guard?  Damn.

24. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS: DE Cameron Jordan
This is a great pick for the Saints.  Jordan is a stud at a need position.  I was really hoping to see Cameron Heyward here for all the Ironhead stories, but Jordan looks to be a better player.

25. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS: OL James Carpenter
The Seahawks just got their right tackle.  I think they could have gotten a Right Tackle later who was just as good, but Carpenter can play.  He proved it for several years in the SEC.

26. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS: WR Jon Baldwin
There is no question that Baldwin has talent, but I always have a problem with 1st round picks who didn't produce in college.  Baldwin was not a dominant player at Pitt, and I think this is another example of Pioli's ego.  He may be wright about Baldwin, and lord knows a second outside receiver is not a bad idea for the Chiefs, but Baldwin was nowhere near a 1st round grade, and if they did miss him.....hell Austin Pettis is better anyway.

They should have drafted a Right Tackle, or hell even Rodney Hudson.  But I want to give Pioli a little credit for leaving his comfortable little box and drafting a player who wasn't from the SEC.

27. BALTIMORE RAVENS: CB Jimmy Smith
Well, if Ray Ray can keep the rookie in line, this was a great pick.  Smith is a big, athletic corner, who will transition to Free Safety later in his career.  The admitted pain killer abuse already is a huge blinking red light though.  Course hell, when your team leader has been on trial for manslaughter, what's a little Codeine?

28. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS: RB Mark Ingram
Wow...well, Reggie, it's been real, it's been fun.  I can't wait to see where he lands, because this just about guarantees that Mr. Bush is out the door.  Unless they are moving him to Wide Receiver full time.

29. CHICAGO BEARS: OT Gabe Carimi
Bears fans, you can now rejoice.  Carimi was the best OT in college football last year, and the Bears had no bigger need.  Oh, and he's used to cold weather, which will be huge in Soldier field next winter..

30. NEW YORK JETS: DE Muhammad Wilkerson
Gang Green just got a monster.

31. PITTSBURGH STEELERS: DE Cameron Heyward
A Big end who can play up front for their aging Defensive Line.  Heyward is solid, and he fits what they do.  He is fired up to get past the negative perception for Ohio State ends. Let's see if he can do it.

32. GREEN BAY PACKERS: OT Derek Sherrod
Remember all that noise about how the Packers Offensive Line is thin and aging, and Aaron Rodgers is going to take too many hits, and they need to find a way to run the ball.  Yeah, well, that's all over.  Sherrod is a stud of an Offensive Tackle and a great value/need pick for the champs.  Just as important, he has the agility and body type to play the left side, which lets him project Bryan Bulaga to the right, which is a much better fit with his short arms, well short for a NFL left tackle anyway.
