Pollard told CBSSports.com that the NFL will be dead in 30 years due to the league’s insistence on emphasizing player safety and removing the game’s natural rugged nature.
Pollard went on to say that we’re not far off from a player eventually dying on the field. Unfortunately, he could be right about that.“Thirty years from now,” he said, “I don’t think it will be in existence. I could be wrong. It’s just my opinion, but I think with the direction things are going — where they [NFL rules makers] want to lighten up, and they’re throwing flags and everything else — there’s going to come a point where fans are going to get fed up with it.
As he points out, athletes are becoming bigger, faster, and stronger; as a result, the hits and subsequent results will likely have devastating effects.
Short of just going to two-hand touch, all of the player measures in the world can’t lessen the impact of players hitting each other over the span of three hours.
Will we see the end of the NFL in 30 years though?
No.
NFL Sundays have become such an engrained part of American culture that football’s death is nearly impossible to envision.
Oh, and one other thing. The shield makes a boatload of money. As long as that continues, they’ll put me on the field at middle linebacker for the Jacksonville Jaguars if folks keep tuning in to watch.
