West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith and Southern Cal’s Matt Barkley must know something we all don’t. The Kansas City Chiefs hold the #1 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, and despite this being a weak draft on all fronts, the team definitely needs a quarterback.
The Dallas Morning News is reporting that neither player will participate in the Senior Bowl. Smith is currently rated the top quarterback prospect available, but that could definitely change.
Smith had all but sealed up the Heisman race in September and early October, but stumbled down the stretch with 5 straight bad losses in Big 12 competition.
Smith was not at fault for those losses, and still finished the year with 42 touchdowns and only 6 interceptions. Smith for his part doesn’t need the Senior Bowl to quantify his status, and a bad showing could hurt his status.
Barkley’s decision to not attend is puzzling. At this point you would have to assume that he feels he’s the next quarterback on the board, and his body of work will prove his worth.
Barkley miss the final two games and did not put up the numbers he did as a junior. He was still solid with 3,273 passing yards, 36 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions, but the Trojans finished the 7-6 and not ranked.
With so many teams needing quarterbacks Barkley is banking that Smith will go top 5, and allow him to fall anywhere from 7 at Arizona to top 15.
