The San Diego Chargers have whisked away offensive coordinator Mike McCoy from the Denver Broncos to name him as their head coach.
According to the league’s website, McCoy has told the Broncos that he has accepted the position.
McCoy has been a hot name on the coaching carousel having interviewed with the Philadelphia Eagles, the Arizona Cardinals and was expected to meet with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Chargers have several pieces in place that can help them become a good team again.
On paper they are a long way from being the Super Bowl contender that they once were.
The positives are that they have quarterback Phillip Rivers and a speedy receiving group of recievers that only needs a true number one guy to make them elite.
Linebacker Shaun Phillips is a free agent.

You could not blame the 31-year-old for pursuing an option with a championship-caliber group at this stage in his career.
Running back Ryan Matthews was billed as the heir apparent to LaDainian Tomlinson but injuries and fumbling issues have curtailed his ability to consistently contribute.
McCoy also inherits a team that needs stability on both their offensive and defensive lines and must look elsewhere for a tight end sooner than later.
Antonio Gates has been nothing but the man in SD but McCoy has the fresh start mantra on his side.
McCoy’s claim to fame was transforming the limited Tim Tebow into a playoff-caliber quarterback during his stint in Denver.
This season McCoy rebuilt the Broncos offense to suit Peyton Manning’s skill-set.
His ability and willingness to adapt his scheme to suit his roster is perhaps his most attractive strong point.
If the 40-year-old can continue to do what he has already done in the past, he may turn out to be the off-season’s smartest coaching hire.
