Cleveland Browns QB Situation Going Forward

First-year starting QB Brandon Weeden did not play up to the standards of the other rookie passers around the NFL last season, and that’s brought about speculation that the Cleveland Browns will be looking for some competition at the position for 2013. The fact that it’s an all-new coaching staff and front office adds to the notion that more options at QB will be on the roster by the time training camp kicks off.

In response to a question as to whether the Browns are considering a new QB, owner Jimmy Haslam responded, “You know, I think [OC] Norv [Turner] and Chud [HC Rob Chudzinski] have been very open that they like a lot about what Brandon [Weeden] does, but we’re gonna have competition at that position. I think competition makes us all better. We’ll see where that competition comes from.”

Grossi doesn’t think the reports of the Browns targeting Michael Vick are on point, but he does bring up the
connection between Turner and 49ers backup QB Alex Smith, who may be available via trade this offseason. And there’s also the possibility of using another draft pick on the position (though probably not another first-rounder). No matter who’s brought in, Browns LT Joe Thomas believes that Chudzinski has the acumen to tailor the offense to the personnel on-hand, as opposed to the other way around.

“We haven’t talked specifics about offensive scheme,” Thomas noted. “I know Chud’s a smart guy and he’s gonna maximize the abilities of the players we have. So if we have a guy back there who’s athletic like Cam Newton, he’ll probably incorporate some of the zone read stuff. But if we’ve got a guy like Derek Anderson, what he was the first couple years, we don’t want him running anywhere — so I think it’s gonna be more of a traditional offense.”

Now we just have to find out who it is that’ll be back there running the offense.
