Ex-NFL RB Leroy Hoard Suffering After The NFL

Andre Waters, Dave Duerson, and Junior Seau. All NFL players. All of these players who took their own lives and everyday those names are repeated by Leroy Hoard. He considers himself “one of the lucky ones”.

As a fan, and even speaking personally, you enjoy hearing hard hits coming through the screen. You love to see Ray Lewis knock someone down, but at what cost are we enjoying this? As of late the NFL has been experiencing a string of lawsuits from the behalf of 2,000 unified NFL athletes, who have alleged that the NFL has failed to acknowledge and address the neurological risk associated with the sport and then deliberately failed to tell players about the risks they faced. There are more than 80 pending lawsuits against the NFL.

Spending 10 years in the league, Leroy Hoard who was known going right through you and right to the goal line. Since his retirement from football Hoard has been suffering from depression and memory loss, he even noted in the video that he just sits in the dark, even for three hours at a time. Not many players come forth and give face to what they are going through but ex-NFL RB Leroy Hoard did just that, giving an interview to ESPN’s “Outside The Lines”, Hoard takes you on a journey of what has becomes his life and what the future holds for him and his family.


Watching this really gives the fan a look at life after football. When the cameras are gone, the awards, and the uniform, you no longer see a player but a person. When Hoard says “The same thing thats killing me is saving me” you’re speechless. What do you do when the one thing you love is killing you?

This story really touches you in more ways than one and brings you to the reality that not everything is perfect when you walk off that field.
