Under the MLB’s collective bargaining agreement, in most cases, players aren’t arbitration eligible until they have three years of Major League service under their belt, and the most teams can do to reward players who perform at high level during that time, is add a few thousand to the minimum salary ($490,000).
Landis made his feelings known on the situation in an email to the L.A. Times and lets just say that he isn’t happy.
“During the process, on behalf of Mike, I asked only that the Angels compensate Mike fairly for his historic 2012 season, given his service time,” Landis, who represents Trout, said in an email. “In my opinion, this contract falls well short of a ‘fair’ contract, and I have voiced this to the Angels throughout the process.”“The renewal of Mike’s contract will put an end of this discussion,” Landis said. “As when he learned he would not be the team’s primary center fielder for the upcoming season, Mike will put the disappointment behind him and focus on helping the Angels reach their goal of winning the 2013 World Series.”
Trout for his part has said the right things and is just looking forward to doing well for the Angels this season.
“I mean, my time will come,” Trout said before a team meeting. “I just have to keep putting out numbers and concentrating on one thing, and that’s getting to the postseason.”It’s an unfortunate situation Mike Trout finds himself in, not dissimilar to what Russell Wilson and Colin Kaepernick are currently facing in the NFL, but these are the terms that the players agreed to in the collective bargaining agreement and the the Angels are well within their right to let his service time expire before they make a wealthy man.
