Falcons owner wants Matt Ryan extension done ASAP

Matt Ryan has bided his time this offseason, taking a backseat while watching Joe Flacco and Aaron Rodgers land record-setting megadeals.

His patience is about to pay off — literally.

Falcons owner Arthur Blank told NFL Network’s Albert Breer that he’d like to get a contract extension done with the team’s franchise quarterback “as soon as possible.”

Blank added that both he and Ryan are in a “good place,” but wouldn’t put a timetable on the talks, other than he’s aiming for it to be wrapped up in the “not too distant future,” and before training camp.

While this is no groundbreaking development, it’s notable because the club chose to temporarily shelve negotiations last month in preparation for the draft.

Now with that out of the way, Blank and GM Thomas Dimitroff can begin hammering away at a deal that could net the 28-year-old Ryan upwards of $20 million per season.

Ryan, a two-time Pro Bowler, led the Falcons to a divisional crown and the NFC’s top seed in 2012. He also recorded his first career playoff victory.
