The Diamondbacks have Chris Johnson at third base but Chavez may move into a platoon role. He replaced Alex Rodriguez at times last season, most notably the playoffs, and finished with a .281/.348/.496 line. Chavez also hit 16 home runs which suggests there is still pop in his bat.
When the Yankees announced Alex Rodriguez would miss the start of the 2013 season, it was assumed they would make an effort to re-sign Chavez. Boston was among a handful of teams also interested in signing the 15 year veteran.
