Nate Burleson To Dez Bryant: You Are Not Calvin Johnson; ‘No Way, No How’

Tuesday Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant ruffled a few feathers when he compared himself to Lions star Calvin Johnson, and stated that anything Megatron can do, he can do as well.

“Truth be told, I don’t compare myself to nobody,” Bryant said Monday during an appearance on 103.3 FM ESPN in Dallas. “I think Calvin’s the best at what he [does]. I think I’m the best at what I do.”
“I believe I can do whatever he can do,” Bryant said. “I think it’s just a pride thing. When it comes to football, just being on the field, it’s a mindset and having a mentality. I honestly believe when I’m there, I’ll be feeling like there’s nothing I can’t do. Whatever the coaches ask me to do, I’m going to do it.

Those comments from Bryant of course made it’s way back to Detroit, but Calvin Johnson wasn’t the one to comment on the remarks.

Santonio Holmes: ‘I can’t throw it to myself’

Whenever Santonio Holmes meets with the media, there’s a good chance his soundbite will become a major headline.

Thursday proved to be no exception.

In his first interaction with reporters since last Sunday’s stinker of a game against the Titans — one catch for 25 yards — the Jets’ mercurial receiver failed to take any blame.

“I can’t throw it to myself and catch it, otherwise I would,” Holmes said, via the New York Daily News. “I played 49 plays, and all I know is I had one catch. That’s all I can attest for.”

Adding injury to insult, Holmes injured his hamstring during the game and is expected to miss a few weeks. An official prognosis, Dr. Holmes?

Atlanta Falcons Work Out Three Free Agent Wide Recievers

The Falcoholic has reported, based off a tweet from Saints beat writer, Larry Holder, that the Falcons are reportedly working out three free agent wide receivers in lieu of their 23-17 loss to New Orleans last week.

Roddy White has stated that he will need at least three more weeks before he can be his old self
again.

While Harry Douglas had an outstanding game last week, (4 catches, 93 yards) it appears that the Falcons want to bolster their receiving corps. if these reports are true.

The receivers in question are Courney Roby, Lavelle Hawkins and Mohamed Massaquoi.  Massaquoi was a standout at the University of Georgia, but has struggled to find his footing in the NFL.

Roby has only 25 receptions for 332 yards in four NFL seasons with the Titans and Saints.  He  didn't play in the NFL from 2007-2008 before landing in New Orleans in 2009.  He also didn't play at all from 2010-2011 before playing one more year for the Saints last season.

(PhatzRadio / USA Today) — About six hours before the deadline to match the New England Patriots’ offer to Emmanuel Sanders, the Pittsburgh Steelers have done just that.

The team on Sunday matched the one-year, $2.5 million offer sheet for the restricted free-agent wide receiver, Sanders’ agent, Jordan Woy, told USA TODAY Sports in an email.

The Steelers, who later confirmed the move, retained Sanders rather than take the Patriots’ third-round pick as compensation.

The Pats and Julian Edelman

While the Pats waited to see whether the Steelers let Sanders go, the team locked up another wideout on Wednesday when they re-signed Julian Edelman after letting him test the free-agent market.

Edelman made a big splash at the start of last season, even pushing fellow slot receiver Wes Welker for

game action before a hand injury limited his role. Eventually a broken left foot forced him to injured reserve. Edelman is in position to make a splash this season:

Edelman is one of the Patriots’ hardest workers and he opened eyes among teammates and coaches last offseason and training camp. Specifically, his straight-line speed had improved. … In returning to the Patriots on a one-year deal, which includes financial incentives that will reward him should he remain healthy and productive, Edelman puts himself in the best position to hit free agency again next season and potentially land a bigger offer. The Patriots also benefit, because they need help at receiver, and Edelman’s knowledge of the system has added value given some of the other changes at the position. Edelman is also a top-flight punt returner.

Randy Moss caused a stir when he took over Super Bowl media with the comments that he’s the greatest wide receiver to ever play the game.

Jerry Rice, who many consider to be the GOAT, took exception to those comments and calmly disagreed.

Now the guy who threw so many touchdown passes to Rice has an opinion of his own.

Joe Montana appeared on Pro Football Talk, and in his opinion, “Moss couldn’t do all the things that Rice could.”

Terrell Owens tells Titus Young to know his role.

We recently discussed Titus Young’s recent outbursts that could ensure that he will not remain with the Detroit Lions.

During that post it was suggested that he have a heart-to-heart with another infamous malcontent Terrell Owens.

Now Owens has spoken out.

While participating at an event that his bowling team was a part of, Owens kept it real with the Detroit News.

“He has to understand that Calvin (Johnson is) the No. 1 receiver, and being the No. 2 receiver, you have to go with the flow of the offense and when your time comes, make the plays,” Owens said.

Owens went as far as to say that Young should “know his role.”

Denard Robinson Will Play WR At Senior Bowl

Denard “Shoelace” Robinson broke many Michigan records and will be remembered for a long time around Ann Arbor, just not for his quarterback play.

Robinson was electric in many facets of the game except passing, and because of that he’ll probably never play that position at the next level.

Robinson does indeed want to get to the next level, and that’s why according to the Detroit Free Press,

Robinson will play wide receiver at the Senior Bowl.

Dynamic USC wide receiver Robert Woods will be entering the 2013 NFL draft.

USC junior wide receiver Robert Woods announced Monday he will give up his final year of college eligibility to enter the 2013 NFL draft.

“I feel like I accomplished a lot at USC and I’m very prepared to play at the next level,” Woods said in a Hyundai Sun Bowl postgame radio interview. “I would like to thank my coaches and teammates for everything they helped me with in my career at USC.”

After a Pac-12 record 111 catches last season, Woods had surgery on his ankle and sat out spring drills and offseason workouts before the 2012 season. When the year began, it was clear that the top spot in the USC receiver corps belonged to Woods’ former high school teammate, Marqise Lee, who went on to be named the Biletnikoff Award winner. Woods still managed to catch 76 balls in 2012 to go along with 11 touchdowns.

Woods said after the Sun Bowl that his decline in targets this season did not play “much” of a role in his decision to forego his senior year. But he admitted it was considered.

“If the coaches wanted to keep me another year, they would’ve probably got me the ball,” he said.
Woods was a three-year starter for the Trojans and leaves as the all-time school leader in receptions — 252 — to go along with 2,930 receiving yards. He was also a tremendous kickoff and punt returner, with 4,619 all-purpose yards in his career.

Greg Jennings Doesn’t Think He’ll Be With Packers In 2013

The writing has been on the wall for a few weeks now.  Earlier this season we documented Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings inability to stay healthy and how he felt he wasn’t sure the numbers would be in his favor when it came time to get a new deal.

With Clay Matthews, Aaron Rodgers and B.J. Raji all in line to get new deals, Jennings stated that he wouldn’t be shocked if the Packers didn’t resign him. 

Today Jennings was on NFL AM’s “Double Coverage” with Steve Wyche and Mark Kriegel, when he hinted at the fact that he doesn’t think he’ll be with the Packers in 2013.

“An educated guess? … I’m gonna lean to the ‘no’ side of it,” Jennings said. “That’s my educated guess, my personal educated guess.”

Back in late September during an interview with NFL Network, Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White said that he Julio Jones were the best receiving duo in the league, because “Victor Cruz was to small,”and most importantly because the numbers say so, and “numbers never lie.”

Upon hearing that, Giants Victor Cruz shot back that all he cares about is winning Super Bowls.   So that was that for a few months.

Well a few months have passed, people forgot, and now December 17, 2012, the Giants and Falcons receivers will be on the same field.

Hakeem Nicks was asked about those comments from a few months ago he didn’t mince words when describing his opinion on the matter according to the Newark Star-Ledger.

Is Josh Gordon the future star of the Cleveland Browns?

It has been more than 20 years since the Cleveland Browns have had a true threat at wide receiver and that was Webster Slaughter. For the sake of this article, I’m leaving out Ozzie Newsome because he was a tight end, not a wide out. Don’t look now, but the Browns just might have found their man and that is Josh ‘Flash’ Gordon.

Dez Bryant may be done for 2012

Just as the Dallas Cowboys started to build momentum, it appears as if fate may be dealing them a bad hand.

Wideout Dez Bryant could be done for the remainder of the season.

The team’s website is reporting that Bryant may have a torn ligament in his left index finger that may require surgery.

Bryant injured the finger in the fourth quarter of the team’s dramatic win against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

Zimmer spoke about Bryant and the Cowboys with ESPN Dallas’s Galloway and Company, and had this to say about Bryant’s skills (courtesy of the Dallas Morning News):

“He really reminds me in a lot of ways of Michael Irvin. The way he can go get the football, his acceleration, his run after catch, his strength, you know Michael was great. He used to push guys off. Dez seems like he has great strength when running routes in press. He’s made some unbelievable catches on back shoulder fades that (Tony) Romo has thrown to him. In the Redskins game, he caught that ball and ran about 65 yards. He turned on the jets on that one. I think he’s a tremendous football player. They have a lot of talent there.”

Lions Suspended Titus Young For Sabotaging Passing Offense

Titus Young had a lot of potential coming out of Boise State, but potential to be a head case was not something I expected.

Young was deactivated from the Thanksgiving day game against the Texans, which led to two assistant coaches getting into a heated argument over the receiver.

Specifics were never identified as to why the coaches were fighting, or why Young was suspended for a game.

According to reports, Young tried to sabotage the Lions passing game on purpose.
